How do you best deal with the following? I'd like to have certain contacts appear primarily with a name like "Doctor" or "Janitor" or "Mom" because that's how I usually refer to them. But at the same time I don't want to completely omit their names from the contact information because they can be useful to have sometimes. I tried using a nickname but that doesn't seem to do the trick - I'm not really sure what the point of nicknames is right now.

Another issue is how do you deal with people who share a phone but also have their own phones? For example a family living together with a shared landline. Do you create a separate contact for the family and then one contact for each of the members? And is there a way to group them so shared information (e.g. their address) isn't duplicated?

The default contacts app seems quite limited. So perhaps there are some good replacements for the above tasks?

If you have a Mac (and use iCloud to sync), you can use the Contacts app on the Mac to set the display name of a contact to be whatevers in the company field. It still retains the First and Last name columns if you view the contact, but when you look at your list of contacts, you'll just see the company name. Don't know how to make that happen if you don't have a Mac, though.

As for my family members that share a landline but have their own cell phones (like my mom and dad), I have them setup as their own separate contacts, each contact with a cell phone and home phone entry. Then I can ask Siri to call Dad or Mom at Home (or Mobile).

Thanks. That's a functional workaround. You have to also check the "Company" box to make it work.

So I guess my parents are now a company. Wonder how they feel about that. :D
