Contacts are there but can't see them

When I create a contact from a new number I've received, the contact does not show up in my contacts folder. However, if I do a search using spotlight, the contact shows up there. This only seems to be happening since 3.0, and 3.1 didn't fix it. I have about 465 contacts in folder but that's hardly relevant as I can still add a contact manually from scratch with no problem.
Can't find a previous thread here on this, but surely this must be a common problem

If you reboot your phone can you see them?

I've just tried rebooting but still can't see them. Surely this can't be unique just to my phone.
