Is there a way to force the contacts to stay open in mail for Mavericks?

When trying to send an e-mail to a variety of contacts under Mavericks, it appears you now are required to click on the plus icon in the address bar for each and every contact (the list of contacts closes each time you select a name to send an e-mail to). Worse, when the list of contact names comes up now you have to click on each individual name and then click on the actual e-mail address underneath that name in order to to insert the name into the address bar.

What am I missing? Is there a way to keep the contacts open and easily select a group of names without having to go through three clicks for each and every contact I want to send an e-mail to?

If you have a Group already set up for your contacts, just start typing in the name of the group in the 'To' field and Mail will automatically pull everything from the Contacts app for you from that group and add them all at once.

If you wanted to give leave a contacts window open just go to Window > Address Panel
