I recently switched from an iPhone 3 to a 4s. Prior to syncing to my iTunes acct. this afternoon, all was well.
Afterward, I noticed that all of my texts messages only show the phone # and not the contact name. Also, when calling my contacts, their name no longer shows.
Strangely, under the phone settings, there is no option to control caller ID or call forwarding, unlike on my old 3. I mean there is simply no option to choose whatsoever. Have they disabled the users ability to show or not show their caller ID, on the new 4s?

I didn't sign up for MobileMe yet, but did sync to iCloud.

Wonder if I have a lemon?!:(

Please advise.

Thank you.

Verizon or AT&T ?

Did you check your contacts, do they have names? You probably lost some of it. That happened to my brother. Only way to fix it is to sync with a library that has the correct library.

I had that happen to me after an update to 5.0.1. The way I was able to fix it was to dial *228 to reprogram with the carrier (I'm on Verizon), then it worked as expected.

Numbers no Names

Thanks. All of my contacts do show the corresponding names associated w/the numbers...

Now about the *228, will I then have to re-sync w/iTunes? How about my contacts, will I lose those too? Thx:)

Just to make sure, have you tried turning your phone off and on?

Definitely sounds like a software issue, not like you have a lemon. At worst you should need a restore.

Yep, conventional way, and by holding down the home button while holding down the on/off button simultaneously, and not sliding the red arrow.
Didn't help.

Why would I also be missing the caller ID and call forwarding buttons?

Oh wow, that's odd. That didn't happen. The situation I talked about lost names completely. Have you tried creating a new text message? does that show a name? Try to force quit (hold home button and on/off button at the same time until "slide to turn off" appears then press the home button until the app closes). Do the same for the phone also.

I've had a bunch of customers with this problem. sometimes the *228 works, other times it does not. seems odd that apple hasn't fixed this yet

Thanks for validating the problem:). I'm surprised also, that Apple hasn't addressed this...

Wondering if anyone else has found a solution...other than making genius bar appt. please advise.

Update!!! 1-14-2012

Ok, it seems that I had to delete my iCloud acct. if I want to have my Contact names, associated with my Text messages...?

This was the genius bar solution. Doesn't seem like much of a solution, to tell me that I can't use one of the main features that differentiates the iPhone 4 from the 4s! Hmm...i dont recall it being discounted either. Just sayin'.

This is my 2nd iPhone 4s. The 1st one that I purchased in early Dec. had so many software issues, that they issued me a new one (with A LOT of insistence on MY part!), as the $650 phone was having issues from day one & I'd been trying to "fix" it for over a month.

Now, at least FaceTime,iMessage & Siri, work on this new phone, but still have the issue of NOT being able to use iCloud, AND have my contacts names show (instead of just their phone #'s), when they text or call me. Apple REALLY needs to fix this! This is the first Apple product that Ive ever been disappointed in...

If anyone knows of another solution, I would be most grateful:). Thanks for any help.
