Contacts still showing in messages of restored phone

I lent my iPhone 5 to my dad. He is using my iCloud account. Everything is turned off except for Find My iPhone. When composing a new message on the 5, my contacts show up as suggestions when as he starts entering a name. My contacts do not show up in his contacts. How can I fix this? I never had an issue with sharing my iCloud account with other household members.

Edit: looks like I can remove them one by one by tapping the (i) and "remove from recent". Any reason why these even show up on a restored as new phone?
