Contacts Sync from iPhone to MacBook not working

Hi,

I'm trying to set up syncing of my contacts from my MacBook to my iPhone. I used to be MobileMe subscriber, but no longer. I'm trying to sync using USB connect cord.

Also, I want to do the kid of Sync where it won't over-write one device, and it also won't duplicate contacts. I.e. a "smart sync" not a "bulldozer" sync...

Any help would be appreciated. I just can't seem to find the logical settings in iTunes that I thought would be there... Is it something I should be controlling from my iPhone instead of from iTunes?
