Continuity for Messages only how it works?

Could any one help me understand how continuity for sms messages works. for calling using my mac is not problem it works fine but with messages is different story.

Do i have to enable iMessages on iPhone to get it working?
Also i thought that when it's working it will sync all my messages from iphone to my mac?

I'm on 8.1 and Mac 10.10

Go into messages settings on your phone and check that SMS forwarding is enabled for your mac, you have to set it up for it to work 😀
