I keep my phone docked when I am at my desk, and if someone texts me, I have to take the phone off and text back.

This is the only real problem I can think of, but it brings up that there could be some cool things done if there was more communication between an iPhone and the Mac it is connected to.

-Phone calls through the speakers on the Mac
-Some microphone help from the Mac, which seems to be a problem on the iPhone if your phone is docked too far away from your voice
-When someone texts you, you can text back using your computer to type and send the message.

To me, this seems like a thing Apple would do. I wonder why not?

I like your thinking! They could implement through iTunes for compatibility.

The SMS sending by computer would be really nice add-on. I used it a lot on Nokia S60 phones/PC suite and been missing it quite a bit on iPhone.

    check out this application http://mirasoftware.com/BPE2/

it's not the best for the iPhone, but it works for calls.

as for controlling text messages, if you're jailbroken, install veency (cydia) and then a vnv program like cyberduck and you're good to go.

i had both installed on my 3G but haven't hacked my 3GS i find the battery life is better without jailbraking it

If your jailbroken there are two good options for txting. You can either do that, and install veency and some other VNC on your computer, or you can install a program called treasonSMS, which is just a web based interface for txting on the iPhone

The best way to accomplish this is to install Veency on your jailbroken iPhone, and set up the tethering hack. This will give your iPhone an IP address of 192.168.20.1. You will then be able to VNC that IP address and control your iPhone from your computer.

I believe Veency no longer works on the 3.0 firmware.

+1 on the Nokia p.c. suite. I miss that the most from the e71 being able to just hook it up to the computer and open up the messaging app and text and email right from the computer was nice. Also the tethering manager was great!

Nope, Veency works perfectly fine for me on 3.0 on my 3GS!
