Control volume on iPad 4 without using the buttons

I need to know if this can be done because it's hard for me to press the buttons due to a disability in my fingers. Also, I am sorry if this has already been asked. Can I control the volume in any application without using the physical buttons?

I know one can control the volume in certain apps such as iTunes, but I want to control the volume anywhere.

Hit the home button twice (or swipe up with 4 fingers) and swipe the bar the pops up to the right. That gives you a slider for both volume and brightness.
