I'd like to use Apple Remote Desktop 3 to control a friends computer. I am using an AirPort Express and he has a Linksys router. Both of us are on Tiger.

Could someone give me some simple step-by-step instructions, please?

I have to get Adium set up for him. He insists on using MSN Messenger!

You can't use ARD if you are on a different network than your friend.

But you can use the VNC client function built-in. Have your friend turn on ARD in the Mac OS X firewall. Set the firewall on the router to let the ARD traffic pass through (I believe it is port 5900, don't remember exactly though so you might have to DMZ him temporarily).

Then have him click on "Access Privileges" and check the option "VNC viewers may control screen with password". Make sure he sets a password and tells you what it is.

It might be slow, but it should work.

Dylan,

Try this zero configuration VPN.

By installing the app on both end, you won't need to configure any port forwarding and all that mess. It's been working really well for me.

Wow all very helpful, thanks! Hamachi looks fantastic.
