I tried to control the volume with the volume buttons on my phone the little led on the atv4k is flashing when i press the buttons but the volume is not changing. Any ideas?

It’s supposed to work that way, but doesn’t work with my Apple TV HD either. My Siri remote works fine. My ATV volume control setting is Auto (via IR).

Uups i thought ive seen this working before
There isn’t anything mentioned in the Apple documentation about it though. It’s to control the Apple TV, not the TV from what Apple seems to be saying.

Well…
At least ican now stop looking for an answer 😂👍🏼 Thanks for your help
No wait ... in the App Store description, it does mention controlling the volume with your device:

I just found this on an Apple discussion thread:

”Want to change the volume using your iOS device? Receivers with HDMI-CEC volume support let you adjust volume with the volume buttons on the side of your iOS device. You just need to plug your Apple TV directly into your receiver and not into your television.”

But ... it’s not really the same as what the App Store description states.

Here’s a bit more info from Apple:

”While volume control normally works using the IR sensor on the front of your TV or receiver, some receivers use HDMI-CEC instead. With volume through HDMI-CEC, you don’t need a clear path between your remote and the front of your receiver.”

Siri remote controls aTV via Bluetooth. But it can also learn the IR VOL UP/DOWN commands of the TV remote and control the TV via IR commands (as described in the second post from top).
For that, the Siri remote also incorporates the IR transmitter, kind of legacy-style. Then it is the TV that changes its volume based on IR command or in case Audio System (Logical address 5) is connected and HDMI-CEC enabled, it can control the audio system's volume instead.
No Apple i-Device has such a transmitter, hence is only able to communicate with aTV (and not the TV set!) over WiFi.
It is the aTV then who sends the commands over HDMI-CEC.
Indeed, your TV might also have it's native remote app on your mobile device, then it just replaces the IR remote. The audio system control over HDMI-CEC shall work exactly the same.

It does not matter which HDMI port is used, because CEC is a single-wire system througout the HDMI network:

it works via Wi-Fi instead.
Yes. Wi-Fi from iPhone to appleTV but that does not alter the AVR volume in any way.
It is the appleTV/tvOS that uses HDMI-CEC to route that volume change command on to AVR (or TV).
Also, to the best of my knowledge, the iOS Remote app is not able to communicate with any non-Apple device directly, ie without appleTV as the middleman.
