I was on the Apple online store and chatted with one of their Apple experts. Here's the conversation that took place.

You are chatting with Devon, an Apple Expert

Hi, my name is Devon. Welcome to Apple!
Devon: How may I help you today?
You: I was wondering, can i buy the iPhone in the Apple online store only if I'm a new ATT customer?
Devon: You can purchase the iPhone, then take it to AT&T to sign up for service.
You: So i pick my service plan at the ATT store not online at
Devon: Right, that would be done through AT&T.
You: Will applecare be an option for the iPhone
Devon: I don't have any information on that.
You: Ok thanks for your time
    Devon: You're welcome.
Devon: Thank you for visiting the Apple Store. We appreciate your business. Have a great weekend!

Hopefully this will help some people who are trying to choose between camping at a store or just buying one online.

This is why they need to release the rates!!!!!!!!

This is confusing. Why would ANYONE buy the phone from Apple when all they have to do is get it from At&t and hook it up immediately eliminating all hassle.

Also this destroys the notion of the required contract for the price. You can quite clearly "buy" the phone without service or contract. Interesting.

I really hope they have pre-paid option, even if its ****** and 100 dollars per month

From several of the rumors, have a $500/600 broken iPod. :D

The rumors may be false, but in my experience, its generally true that GSM phones refuse to operate without a valid SIM card....

What if you already have cingular? can you just pop your sim in, or do you still have to take it to a store?

That is an excellent question that I would also love to be answered.

    with Hamburglar.
the patent on the battery allows you to call AT&T to report a stolen iPod. They can then remotely keep the unit from charging.

If you don't sign up for a contract with AT&T, don't count on them turning on the iPod.

If the iPhone hasn't been activated through AT&T how do they send data to it to disable the charging ?

Why would you not be able to use it?

And to the comment of a return it or use it as $600 ipod. I'd sell on ebay for $700 and put that towards a new Apple laptop. Then again $600 you can get your self a Archos 704/5 WiFi with 40gig hd 7in screen and a full Opera browswer with flash, and apple codect support, or the smaller 604/605 wifi with a 4.3in wide screen. Or a 30gig umpc running linux.
