after posting about the external harddrive i tried this method

"You must have missed the memo. Just open your avi files in quicktime and do a save as normally (alowing dependancies). This is basically a 1Mb shortcut file that can be added to your iTunes library. It will then play your avi files right within iTunes and AppleTV as well."

But when i open it in quicktime and saved it, it said it couldnt find the movie or something of that sort what should i do? Thank you for your help

that method should not work in the AppleTV. I am not sure who told you to do that, but that is wrong, unless you have hacked your apple tv to play the unsupported codecs.

how long would it take me to convert AVI to MPEG with isquint

That question cannot be answered without further information. You need to include things like processor type and speed, bitrate, blah, blah, blah. Even if you provide it, it's unlikely anyone can answer unless they have the same setup as you do.
