Conversion problems with pages

A friend of mine sent me an attachment in pages format and I am having problems opening onto my PC is either notepad or microsoft word. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Ask your friend to use Pages on his/her Mac and save the file in a Microsoft Word compatible format, called .doc.

or if its not to be edited, save it as a pdf, much easier to deal with.
