My MacBook Pro only has (2) USB ports, one on each side of the case. I have issues with some portable USB hard drives since the Y-cable is so short requiring (2) USBs next to each other. Is it possible to convert a firewire port to a USB with an adapter?

If it were me I'd upgrade that internal 128GB to a Seagate Momentus XT 750 Hybrid. OR remove the SuperDrive and install an OWC SATA bay and a cheap HDD.

Your internal 128GB is probably heading for a fail anyway.
