My MacBook Pro only has (2) USB ports, one on each side of the case. I have issues with some portable USB hard drives since the Y-cable is so short requiring (2) USBs next to each other. Is it possible to convert a firewire port to a USB with an adapter?

No but you can get FireWire external HDs and enclosures.

Yes but are typically 3x the price.

If it were me I'd upgrade that internal 128GB to a Seagate Momentus XT 750 Hybrid. OR remove the SuperDrive and install an OWC SATA bay and a cheap HDD.

Your internal 128GB is probably heading for a fail anyway.

You could just get a female-male USB cord to extend your 'Y' adapter.
