I need to convert some lossless .flac files to .MP3 for use in iTunes. The .flac files are of lossless quality obviously and well over 1,000 kbps.

I've searched around and read that XLD is the best app for this. Great!

But, when I use it, the output file is a .wav (I want .MP3, how do I do this) and still encoded at well over 1,000 kbps. How do I make it like 256 kbps and .MP3?

The Output Format option in the General Preference Pane doesn't do what you want? It has an "Option" button next to it to set bit rate.

I've used toast to do these. But I don't really know why you would want to transform a high quality sound recording in lower MP3 other than to put it in iTunes and then iPod.

Also, you could import the .wav file into iTunes, and convert through iTunes to mp3

Have you looked at Max http://sbooth.org/Max/ ?

Personally, I've been ripping to Apple Lossless these days and plan to convert my previous FLAC rips to that.
