"Convert to 128kps" Sync Taking FOREVER

Any hints on how to reduce this time? Unfortunately, my Macbook (2Ghz) is only utilizing half of it's CPU power to compress the songs during sync, but with 4,500+ songs, it's taken hours and I'm only maybe 500-750 synced so far!

This happened to me the other day syncing an iPod nano. I had to let it run overnight it took so long.
