convert video tapes to digital format

hi everyone.
is there a program that will help me convert video tapes to a digital format?
Also what hardware/dongle device would be needed to use with a 2018 macbook.
thanks for any info. all my hardware is for pc and so old it it useless. thanks again...

Great question - I'm in the same boat! I've got a few tapes of holidays from my childhood.
I've looked at it 3 ways...
1. Firstly, all of the PC/Mac converters seem to get varied customer opinions on Amazon. So, i'm not convinced that there is a really good one out there? Hopefully someone my have an answer.
2. I thought of buying a Panasonic DVD recorder and then ripping the DVD to iTunes
AND this seems to be the best way for me and most recommended...
3. Use a professional company to transfer in real time your VHS to MP4. This company charges £11.50 per video tape. They upscale to 720p, files average 4mbps and a one hour file is averaging 2GB.
May be worth considering!
