someone with a pc based company wants me to burn a .wmv file to a dvd for them... what all would i need to make this work? is there any mac software that does it straight up? if not, is there any software (ideally free/shareware) that will convert a .wmv to quicktime file of some sort? i guess cleaner might do this, but i don't have it.

any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Since burning it to a data disc would be easy, I assume you mean to a DVD-video? I don't have any of the third-party DVD burning software that's out there, but some of them might do it. I don't know what kind of quality loss will occur though. WMV's generally are designed to be looked at, not edited or converted.

Your best bet might be to find a PC and burn it on there.

yeah, i'd assume video-dvd too (though it wasn't specified... not a tech-savvy person who asked me to do it). but since the video is 3-4 minutes and a dvd data disc wouldn't be needed to store it, i'd assume the same.

i'll check out the 3rd party stuff on versiontracker i guess.

yeah, prospect of converting to burn doesn't seem too good. sadly, i don't know anyone with a pc and dvd burner... ahh well.

still open to suggestions if anyone has experience with particular software. thanks

There is only ONE piece of software that I am aware of that lets you convert wmv files on the Mac, and it is brand new. I've been wanting to do this for a long time myself. Here is the link. http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm

Edit: Just noticed you are looking for freeware. The above software has a trial download, maybe that will work.

nothing helpful here, sorry

I had to burn a crapload of stupid little internet wmvs to a DVD for viewing on snowboard holiday. I used '#1 Video Converter' on my PC. The spyware laden piece of ****.

Just had to get that out of my system, sry

I could never get that to work with wmv conversion.
Hmmm weird ... I just did it a day or two ago and it worked ... BUT ... I remember I had to check or uncheck (can't remember ... whichever is opposite of default) "invert mapping" under the "Audio" tab to make it work ... otherwise it just created a file of 0 bytes in less then a second.

What type of wmv file is it? ffmpegX will convert it if it is WMV2 or lower (WMV3 or media 9 format won't work). flip4mac is the only thing that works with 9 I think.

If you can't get it converted, you could send it to me over iChat, I could probably do it later tonight.

thanks for the thoughts/suggestions/offers everyone. i'm at work now, and when i get home need to fix my g5 (see my thread in hardware. haha), so i'll probably get to doing this in a few days at best. i appreciate the offer to do it for me, if it comes to that. kind of you

i'm guessing it's whatever the most recent format of wmv is.... i'm pretty much ignorant on wmv. anyways, i'll be sure to check back in a couple days and figure something out one way or another. thanks again!
