So i got my hands on a G4 cube this week, thinking about modding it to a backup HD enclosure, 2 or 3 usb 3.0 external 3TB HD's.

My main worry is the heat, the cube obviously will bottle the heat from the HD's.

Will i end up killing my hard drives prematurely?

Well the cube was a computer at one point right? ;) just make sure you use the vans and keep air flowing.

Cubes don't have fans. While a fan can easily be added to the bottom centre of on, it may not be enough to move air around and it may get loud.

I converted one of these to be a file server a few years back. It had two 3.5in hard drives inside and no fans. Never had any heat issues.

My full project log is here http://www.gordyhand.co.uk/maccube.htm It may help you out.
