iPod Converting ID3 Tags - Consequences or Reasons?

I'm in the process of meticulously editing the ID3 info of all 7,500+ songs I have in iTunes to include correct Genres, Groupings, etc.

I've noticed not all ID3 Tags are the same version. Should I convert all of them to 2.4? Do I risk losing compatibility or ID3 data I have painstakingly entered?
