can't help you with reformatting the iPod but backing up the mp3s is easy. you could just leave the files on your Wintel HD and burn a handful of CDs (data not audio), or you could wait until you get the G5 and just network them, it's very simple with Rendesvous. or you could back them up to a FireWire HD. basically whatever is easiest for you. it's just a simple matter of getting the data from one machine to the next.
as for the iPod, do a google search. i'm pretty sure it's easy to do. might even just work when you plug it in to the Mac. shouldn't be a big deal. check the iPod discussions over at the Apple website for a good answer. and enjoy that G5!

Alright, I am going to tell you the best way to extract your songs.

1) On ( I guess this would be your friends mac), open up the Hard Drive

Go to Applications---->Utilities---->Terminal

*For step 2, you may want to name your ipod something that is one word so spaces dont mess you up.*

2*)Type cd /Volumes/nameofyouripodhere/iPod_Control

3) Type

cp -r music /Users/nameofaccountyouareon/desktop

4) Wait for a while, and walla, you are done!

If you have trouble Ill be happy to help more.
