I understand that very soon my Word (2011) files will not open with the new Mac OS, it has been suggested that I convert my files to Pages. I have a lot of Word files accumulated over the years, thought I have for the past 3 years been using pages. How do I convert the Word files to Pages?

I am not sure where all of this information is coming from (I have seen other threads stating the same thing), but I assure you that MS-Office 2011 for Mac works with High Sierra.

Some possible areas of confusion might be coming from the following:

!. Microsoft will stop supporting this app. in October - it does not mean that it will not work, it just will not receive any further updates or security patches.

2. Apple is shifting to 64-bit apps., but not right away. High Sierra will be the last macOS to support 32-bit apps., which include: MS-Office 2011 for Mac.

So, for the next year (at least) you should be good to go.

Edit:

I forgot to add, that you do not need to convert anything, Pages will just open your Word documents. I am not sure how far that goes, I just opened a simple file with text only.

[doublepost=1505060258][/doublepost]Here is what MacWorld has on their site, and this lead me to my question.

If you use Microsoft Office with the macOS High Sierra beta, take note. Microsoft announced that Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office apps may have problems with the High Sierra beta; Office 2016 should run, but users may encounter crashes. Office 2011 will not work. Office will have full support of the final version of High Sierra, as Microsoft has clarified in a support document.

Note: "Office 2011 will not work", that seemed to me a rather definite statement. I hope it is not true. But I does seem that in time, a year or so, will be forced to convert my Word files.

In any case, thank you for your reply.

Edit: How does one open a Word file in Pages? l have been on Apple machines for over 20 years and I suppose I should know how, but.....

Right-click, Open With, Pages.app

It's that easy. Do it with all your documents and save with the .pages filename. Do it relatively soon so that if Pages does make a mess of a particular document (because it has really complex formatting or whatever) you still have a working copy of Word 2011 to open it and fix it.

[doublepost=1505060991][/doublepost]My ignorance is showing again. "Right click"? My Apple mouse does not have right click. If I open the Word doc and save a ".pages filename" is not an option.

hmm. I have a trackpad gesture where I use two fingers to do it. Although I've had a Macbook for 4 years I still use Windows terms it seems. ctrl-click

I am not sure which mouse you have. Else press ctrl while doing a mouse click.

i found a source that seems to work. GOTO about this file, open, save as Pages. It claims to convert all similar files as well.
Thanks again.

My apple mouse does have a right click and I am able to open my Word docs in Pages but I am hoping to find a way to convert hundreds of Word docs to Pages format. Goal is to be done with Microsoft. Problem with Pages at this time is that Pages wishes to save updated docs (with a different name) to the last folder saved to rather than the folder I am currently working from.

I have a Magic Mouse, and right click is not enabled by default. You have to go to System Preferences/Mouse, and check a box to enable right click.

If you enjoy the challenge, Applescript should be able to do it.

"right click" = "control-click" (they are the same thing).

I don't believe there's any rush to get rid of Office '11, even with High Sierra. There have been postings over at macintouch.com about this (btw, that's a very good website for mac info, one of the oldest Mac-related sites on the web).

I -have- seen postings that if one converts to APFS, Office '11 might have trouble.

If I were you, I'd just keep using Office '11 for now, but at the same time explore and experiment with other options if the time comes when forced to "move away from it".

Pages and LibreOffice are good alternatives if you don't want to spring for Office '16.

(I'm not an Office user. My only need for the program would be to open files received from others that were produced in Office, and I very seldom get one of them.)

The key word here is MAY! I'm sure there will be issues. But, in the short run, MS Office 2011 may still be viable. In lieu of all of this, I have updated to MS Office 2016.

But the statement that "Office 2011 will not work" in the final release of High Sierra 10.13 may or my not be true. No one knows at this point. But the High Sierra Betas seem to point that it will in fact work, but as I say, in the short run.
