i don’t have the X. My wife does. When she runs on the treadmill she uses some program that with her last phone made her touch the phone to keep it awake. ..yes. She could change the setting and change it back.

The X knows she’s looking at the phone with this app or when reading and stays on.

She came from a 6S Plus and seems to love the X. She actually likes the less wide body.

Someone will chime in with a correction if I’m wrong but I think that’s the “attention aware features” which has the face depth camera check to see if the user is looking at the screen before dimming the display. Pretty nifty although who knows what it’s doing to us with all them IR beams!

I am sure there is a technical setting or functionality.. my point of this thread was to give insight from people who don’t frequent an iPhone forum. My wife didn’t read the specs before buying the X. She just wanted it. She was so stoked about it this morning.

IR light has less energy than visible light.

In other words, your light bulbs and the screen you’re reading this on are probably more dangerous.

Ah gotcha. Yep, it’s a nice device. Even some of the known features are a joy to actually use, imo. For example I knew it was all swipe/gesture based but actually interacting with it that way for the last two weeks has spoiled me for button-based operation. Not to say the 6/7/8 variants are bad in anyway.

True. I actually did some binge internetting about this when I first got the X so now I’m pretty ok with it. I suppose I was just being a provocateur

I don't have an iPhone X either, but since my first iPhone (a 3GS) I've been able to set the phone to "Never Lock" when unlocked.

Does the X not have this setting (or your wife's previous phone)?

Or is it that the app itself requires periodic touch?

We have OLED screens, so we don’t even want to know if there is a “never lock” option. Kind of like the first rule of Fight Club...

Has nothing to do with any special camera. Samsung has had this feature on their phones for years
That unlocks with a photo. Not the same. In fact, they had to keep fingerprint detection because their facial recognition tech was so poor.
They’re referring to the eye tracking Samsung rolled out with the s4. This feature keeps the screen from timing out when your eyes are fixed on it (i.e. reading). I loved this when I had an s4 in 2014 and love it now on my X. The difference is, Apple uses the infrared technology while Samsung uses the camera.

Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense.
