Cooling in the new 2020 27" iMac?

Knowing that it would void the warranty - with the extra space of having no internal HDD could one then dremal out a hole and install a fan onto the back of the unit? And if so would one force air in or out of the unit for best effect?

The air is forced thru a shroud out of the rear vents. As an intake it might give more fresh air to the blower fan. But overall just way too much effort for the return.

Altering the intended airflow might also have a negative effect, designing a cooling system can be tricky sometimes.

Hi all

I received my (second) iMac 2020 i7 model.

Like the previous one, the fan noise is audible (but quiet), certainly louder than my 2017 i5 which was essentially silent on idle.

Temperature at idle is about 60-ish C. Ambient room temperature is 24 C. It just seems like this is a bit hot? Can anyone else confirm?

My temps at idle were 47º C.

Interesting - I was getting 54-55 later last night.
Someone else in this thread reported similar temps to me.
Whilst others reported 35-40 at idle.

why so different! I will let it run some more today to finish any indexing or whatever it wants to do. But for sure, it runs hotter than my 2017 4-core did.

I thought it might not just be 'me.'

There is idling fan noise yes. (It might be imperceptible to some.). But it is there. (A very, very low key idling and ambient 'wurrrr'.). And no. My 2012 iMac. I never noticed anything like that. As in 'totally silent.'

Ambient Room at 22-24 and you do anything that will 'press' the cpus. The fans will come into action real quick.

My instinct is these cpus are running hot. If the fan is on at idling. That tells it's own tale.

I don't think the cooling is sufficient for the increase in power of the components.

So yes. It is a 'bit' hot.

That's the price to pay for wanting 6-10 core 14++++++ Intel CPUs. And a last year, mid-range GPU.

Both partners below par for heat efficiency. For anyone who has any doubts about 'why' Apple lost patience and just decided to do the AS.

The performance is sound (for an iMac.). But the efficiency and cooling are sub-par. It forced Apple's hand. (That and the bugs found in Skylake, allegedly...)

It runs hotter than my 2012, for sure. But it's doing a lot more. Without cooling or the process efficiency to match it perhaps.

Perhaps the variance is unusual.

I'm also wondering if Apple might issue a firmware patch for this if the fans just kicking in for interface work in Z-Brush (really?) counts as stressing the cpu.

At idle, I’m getting ~53C temps. If I max out the fans with Macs fan control, I can push it down to ~50C. I don’t do this though, I just tried it to see what affect full speed fan speed had on idle temps.
 
I'm noticing significantly less thermals on my 2020 iMac i7 w/5700XT than my mid 2011 iMac i7. My room feels much cooler overall. Fan noise during idle is quiet. Idle temps are around 45-48 deg C.

A day has passed, I think indexing or whatever is done - as idle temperatures are now down to 41C at its lowest point, in a room that is ambient at 24C.

I installed Macs Fan control as I was curious about the fans - many people say the iMac is silent at idle and also say the RPM is 1200. Well, my iMac is doing 1200RPM and I can definitively say that it is louder than my 2017 iMac. It's not loud - just noticeable in an otherwise silent room. The 2017 iMac was virtually silent at idle.

My i7 5700 XT will be here tomorrow and I will compare the two as well. Im currently typing on a 2017 maxed out 5k iMac and the fans are dead silent unless im gaming or pushing the machine. I will say that the fans ramp up pretty fast on the 2017 model and from watching a ton of videos and posts from people, the 2020 is much better in terms of fan noise and temps. I will do some testing on my machine tomorrow.
 
My 2020 iMac ist just installing the supplemental Update, without CPU load it is inaudible, just like my 2014 iMac. In fact I was worried that something is wrong as I could not hear anything when switching it on, displaying the Apple Logo took a short time.

I guess, I have to enable the starting sound to spare me an heart attack when switching it on again...

My idle temps are now ~35 so something (indexing, photoanalysisd, something else) must’ve been running when I was observing the ~50 temps earlier.

Lol I just wish I had your 2014. It was still a pretty good computer. My Late-2013 MBP 15 is suffering.
 
I have just returned my i7, 64gb with 5700XT. Compared to my 2013 iMac the fan was much more noticeable even at same fan speed. Also just starting apps like photoshop or illustrator made the fan ramp up and that got quite nerve wracking to me.

I will continue to use the 2014 iMac as my secondary desktop, where it replaces my 2010 iMac. That one does not get Updates anymore and is quite slow, mainly because of the spinning drive...

I'll never understand why people cannot understand this is a compute powerhouse machine now using Intel 14nm++++++++++++++ process node which heats the hell out, not a simple AiO desktop. The power consumption of iMac has never been as high as the 2020 model. This power must dissipate, and this take fan.

I don't think you'll find a Mac more "silent" ever than this one. What you need is a passively cooled Atom.
