whenever i take a screenshot/photo of something to send someone in a message, i only need it for that conversation, and don't need it saved to my photos library.

but despite there being an option after taking the shot that says "copy and delete" it almost always copies the image, and then ALSO saves it to my camera roll and uploads to icloud.

and just to get ahead of it: no i don't have "automatic sharing" enabled in messages, which i know would save attachments in messages to the photo library.

so i'm having to waste all this time going through and removing all these pointless uploads. i'm just getting really exhausted by the mountain of broken things in apple software. you can wave away an individual issue as "bugs happen"... but when you're bumping up against issues with almost everything, there comes a point where you have to say "maybe this giant company needs to do better?"

Works completely fine for me, do it all the time and never once had the item end up in photos.

i've potentially isolated the bug even more. it actually isn't happening at the 'copy and delete' step. its happening at the time of the screenshot itself. sometimes when i press the screenshot button combo nothing happens. there is no white flash... no preview. i assumed i hadn't hit the buttons correctly and do it again... but in fact it did take that first screenshot and silently added it to the photo library. just replicated the behaviour now.

again, might not happen to you, but its definitely happening to me and its quite frustrating!

It is a bug, I guess. For me it only occurs when I take a screenshot and then email to someone. Sharing it by messages or saving to Files or any other interaction that I’m aware of does not cause this to happen. But share it by email, 100% consistently saved to Photos even though I never wanted it to be. And I take a lot of screenshots all day long, emailing many of them, so each time I have to go into Photos and delete the unwanted screenshot.

Now this only occurs on my iPad Pro, not my phone. It has been happening through most of iOS 17 if not all.

tangental to this problem, is there no way to control whether photos i take inside the messages app to attach to a message also get added to the photo library? this happens 100% of the time and i swear it wasn't the case before ios17.

as an even more frustrating consequence, if you take a photo in messages and its not good, there's no obvious way to discard it. your options are 'done' or 'retake'. and if you missed the moment you were trying to capture, your instinct is to hit done, then 'x' out the attached photo from the message. but again that unwanted photo is then ALSO added to your library to manage. the only workaround i've found is to hit 'retake' and then 'cancel' in the camera mode to back out without saving. but none of this feels intuitive.

again, this frustration with photos and screenshots seem to have cropped up recently, and is really making using the phone needlessly miserable to use.
