I am considering getting a time capsule for my parents. They can't use a mac or pc and never will, however they love their iPad. What I am looking for a is a solution for them to be able to backup all their photo's etc.

What I have in mind is a iPad + Time Capsule + Camera Connection Kit. What I don't know and can't find out is if I can use something like FileBrowser to either:

1. Use the camera connection kit to access a camera via USB or its SD card directly and use FileBrowser to copy its contents to the Time Capsule without having to import all the pics via the photos app.

or

2. Plug the SD card into a USB reader into the back of the Time Capsule (or the camera via the USB lead should it show up its SD card as a drive) and then use FileBrowser to copy the pics from this drive to the main Time Capsule drive.

My thinking is when I visit every so often I can copy and sort through the photos for them but atleast they are backed up and viewable view FileBrowser on the iPad.

Any help appreciated!

Probably not the answer you're looking for but a fairly idiot-proof solution for backing up photos/video. A 1-button process to record from SD to DVD.

My uncle actually has that Sony machine! It is a good bit of kit but Im trying to avoid having DVD's etc.

My goal is something my parents can download their photos onto and then browse them with the iPad without having gone near a computer. The iPad is too small to hold all their pics. I like the idea of a time capsule so I can come along with my macbook pro occasionally and clean the drive up of duplicates, duff pictures etc.

I have FileBrowser on my iPhone, and a friend has a time capsule. I might see if I can test if out plugging a usb hdd into the time capsule and if FileBrowser lets me copy stuff to/from it to the main time capsule drive then Im almost all set.

Will update in the weekend probably if no one has an answer by then.

I have just tried this with a Time Capsule, a multi-card reader, a 4GB SD card, and the new iPad with FileBrowser.
Plugged the SD card/reader into the TCs' USB port and it showed up in FileBrowser along with the TC drive.
I could then copy the whole DCIM folder from the SD card to the TC drive, or I could copy individual sub-folders or photos.
After that I used FileBrowser to browse the photos from the TC.

Just two notes:
I tried 2 card readers but only 1 worked so that path may be a hit or miss.
Plugged the camera (3-4yo Canon 20D SLR) into the TC and that didn't work so that may be hit or miss too.

mlmwalt & poloponies - I had seen these drives. What I wasn't sure about is how I get the pictures of the camera and onto the drive without confirming if FileBrowser will allow me to see the files through the camera connection kit. I don't want to have to import them onto the iPad and then copy them over (iPad too full). Appreciate the tips though.

LAnMarc - Thank you very much for your feedback, I think that will be a good enough for me to commit to atleast giving it a go.

Sorry, I linked to the wrong device. This works directly with the camera or data card and obviates the need for the camera kit.
