I just got a second iMac. I use Timemachine on my first one and tried to boot up to restore from the backup, but it said I have a different machine, or whatever. So, I decided to try copying the user folder from the first iMac but am wondering if it will even work.

Is there a way I can do this and create a matching home folder on the new iMac?

Try /Applications/Utilities/Migration Assistant.app. Target disk mode is the easiest way of using it.

There are some workarounds to do this, but it is risky and can be troublesome. Just start Migration Assistant on the new machine and point it to the Time Machine backup disk and do it that way.
