I am trying to copy my original Aperture library from an internal hard drive on my 2008 Mac Pro to an external FW800 drive. I have several 'vaults' as backups of this library already but want to relocate my original library file itself on another machine. However, whenever I try to copy the original library file, the copying fails about half way through (it achieves 260GB of 699GB) and I get the error message that 'some of the files could not be read/written' (or similar). I have tried repairing the drive in Disk Utility but this has no effect, and no errors are reported with the drive. I have tried several drives and it used to work in the past. Any idea why this might be happening?

Also, I would like to prepare for migrating everything to Apple Photos when it is released, whenever that is. Does anyone know if I will be able to do this using an Aperture Vault or will it need to be from the original Aperture library? I'm aware that this information may not be public knowledge yet, but just thought I'd check.

Thanks for any help!

Almost certainly what Photos is released Apple will allow you to move the original Aperture/iPhots library over. No need to use vaults of backups.

But it seems like you have a problem with your Aperture library or perhaps the disk drive the library lives on. Check your backups and be sure they are readable. If you find a good backup to NOT UPDATE IT.

Thanks! I'm hoping Photos will let me use Vaults, as I can't copy the original library to get it on my new machine... So I'm pretty much relying on that I can use a vault to migrate to Photos. I just hope that the vaults are intact and complete as there clearly is a problem with the original library in that it won't copy.

Let Aperture look at your Library and see if it can repair any problems.

Look under the Aperture Help Menu and find these sub headings:

Work with Projects and the Library/
Back up the Library/
Repair and Rebuild your Aperture Library

Click the last and follow the directions.
