I am getting a new G5 computer, upgrading from a G4. I'm going to put the G4 into Target mode and grab my files. Do I need to do anything besides drag and drop if I want to get all of my email (some mail is a few weeks old, but I need it) from computer to another?

I think you called your own shot. Either drag n drop or when you open the mail app for the first time it should ask you if you want to import any mailboxes or messages from other services. I've done this many times in the past. Or as I do on occasion from work I go to the mailbox I want to save messages from and select all then go to the file menu and do a "save as" to the desktop and put everything on a ZIP disk and take it home.
