    First off:

-Is the 7-8% performance bump worth the extra $275?
-Will I notice the difference at all if I do regular stuff?
-In a few years, will Extreme's be as popular and widespread as the Duo's now?

    Thanks

Its not worth the price difference.

The Extreme isn't a separate processor line, its just the fastest version of whats out now. So in the future, there will just be a different Extreme version of whatever is out then.

Get the Core 2 Duo. The Extreme is not worth the extra money.

I think I'll stick with getting a Core 2 Duo.

I just discovered how much of a steal RAM from MacRAMDirect.com is !!! :D

It's truly incredible, how ridiculously cheap it is compared to Apple.

I was going to upgrade from 1GB to 2B thru Apple for $165, but decided instead it would be worth it to get $117 worth of 4GB RAM from MacRAM and getting a wireless keyboard too! :D

Crucial is another good place to get iMac RAM. I got 4GB of RAM for $107 and the shipping was free... it also came in just 3 days.

If you feel comfortable about opening your iMac and messing around with its inards, while possibly voiding the warranty, replacing the hard drive may also increase the speed and inherent value of your iMac.
