Ok little help needed on the System Profiler front. I've done looked around in my System Profiler and notice that the display info doesn't contain enough information to help a normal user figure it all out. Anyone come up with a better way to determine what card is in the computer?

Well, unless you've changed it, the information at www.apple-history.com should tell you that. Or tell us what kinda Mac you have. :)

A call for comments on "Partially" supported cards

Lets gather together a list of partially supported cards and get some comments on what they can do with CoreImage from those that are using Tiger already.

I've heard that the ATI 9200 is partially supported so lets start with that.

before i edit my original post i want someone to actually provide some proof of "partially" supported cards. What does it consist of and an explaination of what "partially" supported really means. If you're saying it's just using Quartz Extreme it almost isn't worth mentioning. From my understanding Image Units (which are a derivitive of OSL - OpenGL Shading Language) you need a card that supports Shading 2.0 or it gets offloaded to the CPU, period. I've heard nothing about "partial" support. If you're confusing it with Quartz Extreme then i see where the miscommunication is but otherwise I don't quite understand where this came from, it seems to have just popped out today.

All of my questions over CI answered in a short and simple manner. Good post, even better first post. Heck, someone should bump this guy up to demi-God status or something...:p

Like someone said above, having a list of supported and non-supported cards would be a great addition....

I did one better, I actually give a list of supported machines. However please note that you could've upgraded your video card with the PowerMacs so if you have, feel free to use the list of supported cards, otherwise the stock configurations should be correct according to http://www.Apple-history.com

if there's anything missing or wrong, feel free to let me know.

Apple published their list as "Core Image-capable graphics cards include:", therefore, there are other cards that aren't listed that are/will be supported by Core Image.

Maybe if the FAQ could be edited to show this modified wording? (Mostly "include" instead of sounding definitive in the wording.) Apple pretty much just listed the current GPUs they were shipping. The ATI 9700 Mac Edition should also work just fine under Core Image as well as the ATI X800.

oops totally skipped over your comment. Since then i have included that the list is not complete and there could be others. it also says derivitives of those cards are supported, meaning any Radeon 9600, any Radeon 9800, etc. Since the cores are identical (per 9600 for example) in actual specs (except in clock speed and ram speed), but features are the same.

I guess one way to find out if your card supports Shaders 2.0 is to check out one of the demo's on ATI's page for cards that support it. I totally DIG the Animusic Demo. Check it out :D

BTW - the list of cards on ATI's site that support Apple's Smart Shaders 2.0 is
  • RADEON 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition 256MB
  • RADEON 9800 Pro Mac Edition 128MB
  • RADEON 9800 Pro 128MB
  • RADEON 9700 Pro 128MB
  • RADEON 9600 Pro 64MB
  • MOBILITY RADEON 9600 64MB
I suppose you can add these to the list of CoreImage supported cards (if indeed Shaders 2.0 is the key).

Pretty much correct, i made note that all derivitives of the cards are supported. meaning all 9800 cards, all 9700 cards, all 9600 cards, etc. So as it takes up less space. It's already getting quite large :p

Yes I agree. EXCELLENT job on the FAQ. Thank you very much ;)

Thanks for the great FAQ!

What programs are going to support Core Image when Tiger gets released, or shortly after?

In another thread it was said that Adobe said no thanks, since Core Image is not supported on Windows.

ditto what everyone else said...fantastic post! i'm glad that my 9600 pro is coreimage-capable...save money on an upgrade. 7 days 19 hours and 4 minutes to go...

I third. Great post for a newbie, more that I've probably contributed in all my posts...

Thanks for the great sticky!

Will have to remember this post of the "Best Posts of 2005" at the end of the year!

Maybe the newbie should be given member status automatically for this?

Now that we've all got CoreImage specs out of the way, I'm wondering if anyone using a flashed FX5200Ultra PCI in a B&W can get CoreImage running with the QE PCI hack? Heheh, talk about PCI bus saturation...

Awesome FAQ. Thanks.

Now if CoreImage would just support the nVidia GeForce 4 Ti!!

Agreed. sucks that the first version of the 12'' PB isnt supported. The Rev. B is really much better.

Is GPU supported CoreImage really that imporant guys? you still get coreImage, just not as fast in some cases. It doesn't really hinder anything.. yet. It might in the future, but sometime between now and the next OS X release you will notice that there's a big demand behind CoreImage applications. Don't go rush to buy a new machine, give it a shot first without, and if for some reason it doesn't work as you expect, then upgrade. But you might be surprised at just how little CoreImage is used "for now."

Yeah, but some of us are ready to buy a new Mac (in my case I have eyes on the Mac mini), and would prefer to be fully Core Image compatible out of the box. That is why I will try and wait for the next rev. of the Mac mini.

I've heard reports that iPhoto 5 image editing just flies (even on a G4) on Tiger. Betting it's Core Image making the magic change.

Yes! The Dashboard ripple effect is THAT worth it. :)
