I thought the problem was more widespread but I found only this thread on the Internet, so I'd like to post an image of my Magic Mouse that is a lot worse than other seen

Maybe I have an acid sweat because this is the precise spot where I keep my thumb using the mouse

Impressive. I'm not sure how aluminum responds to human sweat. I turn guitar strings black after 20 minutes of use. Elixir for me.

they also have a certain depth, passing your finger over you feel the roughness, so a small amount of material is gone

my mouse has about 18 months of use

Corroded

Mine is just over 1 year old (missed the warranty, doh!).
Check out the impressive corrosion. Definitely a product fault in my opinion.

Mine does this. I don't have large areas like some people are showing, but definitely a more spotted pattern.

My Mighty Mouse has been through a lot with me, so I just think of them as battle scars.

FYI: I used to have the exact same issues with my Powerbook G4. It seemed it was just body/sweat chemistry with that.

I purchased my first Apple Magic Mouse back in November and mine looks just like yours, if not worse! It first started only a couple of months after the original purchase date and has only gotten worse since.

This past week, I went to the Apple store and got it exchanged for a new one with no questions asked. I'm curious if all Magic Mice do this, or if mine was just defective.

Has anyone else here, that has had this happen to them, purchased a new Magic Mouse just to have it flake or corrode again?

I used the same Magic Mouse from 2010 up until last month. The new one is already showing discoloration on the sides where my thumb and ring finger rest (aluminum part). The old one never did. That's what I get for not keeping it. :(

The mouse still works, right?

Do you return your car to the dealer when you get scuff marks in the carpet or elsewhere in the interior? Or if you get a scratch on your iPhone, etc?

My PC mouse here shows shinyness in the plasic where my hand rests (its worn).
My PC laptop's trackpad shows similar, as does every PC keyboard I've ever used (after say, 3 months).

As the apple store guy said, they're not intended or engineered to remain looking perfect forever. If the thing still works, it does the job it was sold to do and thus keeping up its end of the deal, in my opinion.

Things (in general) will show wear and tear if used. Apple hardware is no different.

That "wear and tear" theory doesn't explain how one Magic Mouse that was used for ~3.5 years still looks new, yet another Magic Mouse that's just over a month old already has some discoloration.

Same problem, but it HURTS

Same issue - it's been about a year, but the problems started only 4-5 months after purchasing. I typically have 3 points of contact with the sides of the mouse, half on the plastic/glass, half on the aluminum plating.

The plating right at the top edge is flaking off in tiny little grains, and they are getting embedded in my fingers, kind of like fiberglass splinters. It's quite uncomfortable. It's not a wear pattern, but flaking pieces from the top of the metal edge.

Like the others, I'm a neat freak about clean hands. I have dry skin, so maybe that exacerbates the problem.

I use it about 7 hours straight, 5 days a week, at my job. Going to try and have Apple replace it, or put some kind of duct tape over those points of contact!
