Why buy a Mac computer bundled with Applecare from Costco? If you're a Costco member the second year of warranty is added and chances are good you already have their Citi credit card which doubles the warranty to 4 years total.
I am a new member and have not heard of this. Do you have a link to this info?

This: "Almost no one cares if RAM is soldered or even knows what solder is."

Exactly. Most people who buy a computer don't know what RAM is, they don't know how quickly they will fill up 128GB of hard drive space, they don't know what USB-C is.... and more.

UNTIL they are at work and trying to download important files and find out the flash drive handed to them won't work with their MacBook Pro. UNTIL they attend an important meeting and want to transfer a large video file, and find out their drive on a 3 month old computer is full. UNTIL they realize that their photo and video software needs more RAM....

THIS is the problem. Apple is pushing hardware to people who are are largely ignorant of their current and future needs. They walk out of the Apple store thinking that their $2,000, $3,000 computers will suit their computing necessities only to find out six weeks or six months later that Apple's focus on appearance over functionality doesn't help them in the real world.

Could not agree more. I find it hilarious that Apple even ships new computers with a 128GB SSD. Apple really needs to get with the times. The original retina 15' MacBook Pros shipped with either a 256GB or 512GB SSD and this was back in 2012. Fast forward to 2018/2019 and Apple still ships its 15' MacBook Pros with a stock 256GB or 512GB SSD unless you are willing to pay nosebleed prices for 1TB+ sizes.

All macs even the cheapest ones should ship with at least a 256GB SSD in 2018. The new mac mini should also have at least included a Radeon 5XX Pro discrete GPU with the option to add at least a Vega 16. Meh... I could turn this into dissertation long rant but my overall point is that Apple should be offering better specs at the current price points.

Doesn’t Costco sell Rolex watches?

Possible, but I've only seen Omegas, and if they did they probably wouldn't come directly from Rolex. The Omegas were grey market watches, Omega did not sell them to Costco directly. Costco lost a lawsuit brought by Omega to stop Costco from selling them. I've seen them at Costco recently so the Supreme Court's later ruling the first sale doctrine applies to goods made overseas may be why.

You still need to be with someone who is a member. Your membership card is scanned at the till. No card, no purchase.

No, a gift card can be used in to purchase even absent a membership card. You have to get a member to buy it but anyone can use it in store or online. It's a little known way to go to Costco w/o a membership. It's a great way to buy gas at Costco prices.

For a lot of people 128GB is plenty. In most cases I've seen the problem is how people manage their storage. I've seen people load up their SSD with photos so over time they've used 90% of the space storing them; and yet never reopen the photos after a few months or so. Offloading them to an external drive and making a second backup would free up space without impacting how they use their Mac as well as protect them from an SSD failure.

Granted, there are valid reasons for needing a bigger drive, such as the video editing example above. That's why, when I am asked for help in buying a laptop, first ask how will it be used.

It would be nice if Apple sold 2x the SSD space at current prices but the reality is you would simply lose the lower end models, making a Mac less affordable for some.

Must be a US thing. That won't fly in the UK. If you don't show a card at the entry they won't even let you in.

Costco extends the manufacturer's warranty on Televisions, Tuner-Free Displays, Projectors, Computers* and Major Appliances† to 2 years from the date of purchase. See the manufacturer's warranty for specific coverage terms.

* - non-touchscreen only

Fair enough. It is a US and Canada thing. I forgot Costco has invaded the UK. My niece buys in bulk there, which I find odd given how small her house is.

You don’t need to be a member to buy something at Costo. I was there last week with my brother(member) and made a purchase with a CC. You just have to get through the door. I assume you would a have to become a member to take advantage of returns and warranty deals without a member taking care of it for you.

A member can purchase a Gift Card for anyone. They need to ensure however if they purchase over the card amount they need to pay the overage in cash or debit card. COSTCO will not allow non members in an overage situation to use a VISA card. :apple:

They sure do, at some locations.

I would never pay a membership to shop in a store thats like saying you have to be a member of Mc Donalds to buy a Big Mac.

Ehh, not the same lol. Our membership pays for itself with costco rewards on household products etc. Annual gas spending brings back $500 through their credit card. All depends on your needs. So we don't actually pay any fees end of day, but get money back.

Just like others who will never pay for a $3000 laptop that can be purchased through another brand for $1500 with same specs.

I always receive more than enough in cash back from Costco to cover my membership. Many people do. There are deals where you join and receive enough discounts to bring membership cost down considerably. You can join, buy the computer, then quit for a membership refund. Anyone can buy alcohol or prescription without membership. Their Kirkland brands are great value and quality. Including their Kirkland wines. Their meats are some of the best deals. Gas is always the cheapest. Tire deals. The list is long. 90 day return on a computer. Pretty much unlimited on everything else. Where else does that?

Not wanting to join or pay an upfront fee to realize long term savings is your choice. Which is a bit ironic considering the overpriced products being discussed here. ;)

Fair enough, to each his own. I save enough to make the membership worth it. Gas alone is ~20 cents a gallon cheaper, that alone pays for my membership.

Why not? It is not a country club.

The prices alone, as repeatedly said here, makes the membership worth it. From beer and vacations to caskets, and grocery, the prices are low enough to erase the cost of membership and more in 4-6 months.

Add the rebates from Costco and the separate rebate from the Citi Visa add to more than twice the membership price - depending on the level of spending.

Try it.

Been an Apple user for 20+ years and have never seen the number of deals being pushed by Apple for their newest products that I've seen in this past month. Hard not to believe this is a direct response to their price increases. Maybe they jumped the gun on what they thought people were willing to pay for that shiny Apple logo.

Seriously. I save $60 a year in toilet paper alone for my family of 5.

Costco has thin profit margins. Makes Apple look greedy.

Apple looks greedy all on its own. No assist from Costco needed.
I love Costco and have been a member for 30 years but this gives you an idea of how desperate apple is for computer sales and how sad they have become as an innovative company.

Apple is still innovating. It's just not to the benefit of customers. For example, how many Macs were affected by the awful keyboard problems? How long did Apple deny there was a problem? Apple's efforts fighting right to repair, soldering drives and RAM instead of leaving them upgradable, battery killing iPhone updates, and on and on.
[doublepost=1544721031][/doublepost]I'm an Apple customer. My 2011 MBP is going strong, and thanks to it's removable hard drive and upgradable RAM, I upgraded both in the last few years. Sadly, I don't see a path to stay with Mac. Why would I buy more products from a company that has decided to treat it's customers with contempt? A shame really as they make a great OS, but Windows has improved to the point where that OS is nice to use as well.

The days of Mac vs PC where the Windows platform was garbage is gone. Balmer's departure from MS signaled what has turned out to be quite a turnaround from the lazy, lumbering company MS once was. Those Surface laptops along with a few other PC companies are turning out some great hardware. The lead that Apple once had has all but disappeared.

Kudos to other companies for stepping up.

Apple, where art thou?
