Could anyone confirm if apple still uses 2 128 gb chips in m1 air or they might have shifted to a single 256gb chip ? Planning to buy m1 MacBook air and it would be really nice if someone could confirm SSD speeds with their latest buy.

A few people who have recently purchased one says they perform like a 2x128 set up.

Though we don’t know if that’s just previous stock as it was their best selling config, they produced them in masses.

No one is presently reviewing this device. So you will have two buy and test the speed. If slow, return.

They'd also have to find one purchased before the M2 (or before the supply chain issue) if they want a comparison! That is, if they wanted a formal test and measurement. To see if it's acceptable, well, they could just buy and see how it “feels”.

But that’s a burden for a prospective buyer who simply wants to know — in advance — what testers and others have found.

Some enterprising YouTuber who already owns the 2020 M1 needs to buy one now and do the testing! Guarantee there's be lots of clicks.

Or, iFixit should buy one and do a breakdown and comparison of the innards!

It’s sort of like asking if M1 still runs at 3.2 GHz or if Apple cut the clock speed by half recently.

Apple literally says M1 MacBook Air runs 2x faster SSD compared to previous gen. Apple would be open to legal implications if they cut the SSD speed in half. They have not updated that claim since 2020. The press release is still there.

In short, there is no chance Apple is using a single 256GB chip on M1 MBA.

No YouTubers have uploaded click bait videos so I think it’s safe to say it’s still dual type. Plus it would generate cost for apple to redesign and redo their manufacturing to accommodate the single chip for the old mba. The iPhone SE except the battery and processor is the same. Same camera, screen, etc. they added Ceramic Shield properties but that it it’s 90% the same.

It’s easy to find out. Anyone who has recently bought it just do the SSD speed test and see if it is the same as when it originally came out.
