Hear me out,

I like to update my iPhone when the form factor changes.

I feel like with the iPhone X I get at least 2 years for that, now that we know the iPhone Xs is the same form factor.

BUT!

I usually miss a feature or 2 that I badly wish I had. For example, if I remember right the iPhone 6s had a 5MP selfie camera while the iPhone 6 was just a VGA(?).

BUT!

This year, there really isn’t anything remarkably better, those 1 or 2 amazing features that I would miss. I’ve heard others saying similar.

So spending fresh dollars on an iPhone Xs not only gets you potentially only ONE year of that form factor, but not a whole lot of better features either.

Hence, the lost year.

Well, for some, the Xs Max alone is worth the upgrade. Gigantic Note-Esque screen size with iOS. That's why I'm getting it.

I agree. I’m actually thinking about it. That Max is awesome.

But I’m just talking about the Xs

Every ‘S’ year we get the same thing - this is a lost year, etc etc. And still they sell millions of the devices...

I won’t upgrade, but I often don’t. The Max does really appeal, but I am pretty happy with my X and iPad Pro as a combo...

Roll on next year and let’s see what it has to offer...10x optical zoom? Latte maker? Unobtanium chassis?

I don't see many people who had the X and didn't want the max size upgrading to the xs. There's just no tangible difference aside the storage option of 512gb, which I think will be a niche demand.

I think Apple went all out for the tenth anniversary, as was king rumored they would, and they just didn't have too much more to bring this year. Imo thebwatch was the bigger deal this time.

It's doubtful many X owners are upgrading to the XS since it's so similar. Apple knew this, which is why they delayed the big screen XS max a year to be able to coax the enthusiasts into buying 2 phones in two years. The XS will definitely be the underdog this year but they needed it in the line up.

But this is the first “S” year where analysts have reduced sales expectations to my knowledge

Also to be fair, every prior “S” model has brought more significant internal upgrades or some other big feature - video camera, siri, Touch ID, 3D Touch, “wireless charging” if you count the 8 series as a “7S”

I mean, look at the 6s and how huge of an upgrade it was compared to the 6. Literally every aspect of the phone was significantly improved on, from the camera to the chassis, to the Touch ID to the LTE and wifi. Whereas this cycle, the new A12 bionic CPU has shown the smallest improvements yet from one generation to the next, whereas the A9 was a massive performance gain all around.

It benefits those who purchased the X last year the most...they’ve already experienced one year of the new design and these new phones don’t improve in any significant way. They get to hold on their phones for another year and save some cash for next years upgrades, should those prove more fruitful

This year is more aimed at those who have the iPhone 7 and older, understandably so

OLED screen at over 6 inches on the iOS ecosystem is well worth the upgrade from X to me.

This. I’ve upgraded every year since the 3G. Love my X but I miss the size of the plus sized phones so i ordered a silver 256 Max. Works well with my MacBook Air, iPad Pro and Apple Watch.

Correct. 6.5" OLED display I knew this was happening and the "Lost" year is actually the 2017 iPhone X it's small and only has 3GB RAM and discontinued
This year the 6.5" XsMAX is the one to buy. 4G RAM. Best camera In the game. Best speakers. I could go on.

Worth upgrade ( 10 things )

1/ 6.5 oled
2/ A12 chip
3/ new shine gold
4/ camera improve
5/strereo speaker
6/ 2 sim ( travel )
7/ stainless steel frame ( better than chrome
8/ compatible ios 12
9/ new look
10/ $999 on hand ( act like rich :) )

My 10 reasons for getting the new XsMAX

1/ 7nm A12 Bionic
2/ 4GB RAM finally
3/ New GPU 50% faster
4/ Louder better quality Dual speakers
5/ 4x4 MIMO Anetnna improved LTE Data
6/ 6.5" improved OLED display
7/ New Gorilla Glass 6
8/ Machine learning smart camera tracking
9/ 1 Hour longer battery time.
10/ Price. I use Sprint. Trading in my Galaxy S8+ that was given to me free by Samsung to test for a year, now its mine. Traded in for a XsMAX on Sprint is only $4.00 a Month for 18 Month at the end its mine paying $267. Or I can get a New iPhone in 12 Months. This is a insane deal.

Well Apple forced Plus “+” users to get the iPhone X . Now they are successfully forcing them to get the Max.

I am with the OP though..
Enticing features which made me upgrade on launch days:
6+ to 6s+ for the 3D Touch
6s+ to 7+ for the dual cam
7+ to X for the faceid/form factor/oled

Now I should ideally take the XS Max. Getting a bigger screen is the only attractive factor which Apple has thrown at us, which doesn’t entice at all.

I’m happily upgrading from the 8 plus to the Xs. I’m looking forward to the nearly same screen size and battery life of the plus but in a smaller lighter form of the Xs. I have zero desire for a bigger phone screen than the plus. Point being there are millions who buy iPhones every year. We all fall into different needs and wants. I don’t see this launch as a failure as I’m sure the Xr, Xs and Max will fill many people’s needs and desires.

3D Touch was more enticing than the Max screen? I never would’ve guessed.

At that point of time, yes it was. If it was a choice between big screen or 3D Touch, I would have chosen the bigger screen. 3D Touch came with the plus sized screen and it was too enticing, since nobody had it. I’m not sure about others, but I have adapted to 3D Touch and find it highly useful. Talk about innovation. Next year Apple can definitely bring in a 7” with just a minor size bump.

Can’t a long press do the overwhelming majority of what 3D Touch does?

It seems like 3D Touch is being deprecated already.

Lost mind, not lost year. Who told you need to upgrade every year?
