After changing out my Mackbook screen and updating the OS to Sierra the display is way too bright even on the lowest setting.

Im not sure why it is so bright but it isn't normal.

I thought I could change some of the settings from the Displays preference pane in system preferences, but when I click on it I get this error:

Preferences Error
Could not load Displays preference pane.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to why the screen is so bright and why my Displays preference pane is not working?

Appreciate any help,

Thanks.

I assume you had the screen replaced by Apple themselves...

Try moving com.apple.windowserver preference file to trash, you can find it here:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.<letters/numbers>.plist

And also System Preferences caches:

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.usercache

Then restart your Mac and try again.

Failing that, I'd suggest backing up and re-installing macOS.
