Could PhoneView let me keep save game data without using a iTunes backup?

I recently had to restore my phone without using an iTunes backup. I had a bug which remained after restoring from a backup and I figured that I needed a fresh start in order to fix it. It worked, but in the process I lost quite a lot of save game data. Afterwards, someone told me that I could have used PhoneView to get the data off the phone and then afterwards I could have put it back on. Is this true?

Indeed it can!

Here's an article about doing exactly that to get 'Angry Birds' game data from one machine to another.

You could do that as a backup, however, rather than as a transfer-method.
