Could the 2010 MBP port be used as thunderbolt in theory?

The mid-2010 MBP has a mini-displayport plug that is, for all intents and purposes, both physically and electrically identical to the 'Thunderbolt' port specifications on slightly newer machines. The two ports have identical data transfer bandwidths; I guess what is missing is the firmware chip that tells the port "how" to be a thunderbolt port and the software to interface with it. But data is data, right? With the right software, couldn't the mini-displayport connector operate like thunderbolt and say, power two displays?

No. There's an actual chip on the board that tells it how to be a Thunderbolt port. It's not just software.
