Could the MacBook come back with M1?

Personally I would like to see the 2015 MacBook come back with an m1 chip in it. With the power efficiency of m1 and the advancements in battery tech seen in recent years maybe they could put a proper keyboard in without having to make it much/any thicker.

A sub 1 kg laptop again. One can dream.
 
So how to position it between MacBook Air and iPad Pro? The MacBook Air is already fanless as the MacBook was

About the weight, I think you are too optimistic on that. An iPad Pro plus the keyboard is already exceeding 1kg.
 
I just want to ask why?

To me the Air has the position of the lowest tier MacBook and I really se no room for anything else M1 (other than variants woth bigger screen) that space.
 
If it had still been produced, it would have had M1. However I doubt Apple is gonna reviwe it now, instead I think we will see a full Macbook Air redesign and It will hopefully get smaller version. If they reduced the the bessels, I could imagine a version with around the current screensize in smaller package and a version with 14-15" in the current size.

Which new one are you getting ?

I have a 2015 i5 rMB and love it but would love to see an M1 version for sure - the thin and lightweight features make it indispensable for travel!
 
In my mind, the 13" MacBook Pro is the MacBook.

I mean, back when the aluminum unibody design debuted for the MacBook Pro, back in 2008, they also updated the more expensive black MacBook with the aluminum design too (the cheaper white MacBook was still plastic). The following year they renamed it to the MacBook Pro, presumably to help distance it from its cheaper plastic sibling.

Keep the MacBook Air as an entry level machine, rename the 13" Pro/upcoming 14" model to MacBook, and the 16" remains the MacBook Pro. I know some people would hate the idea of not having a "Pro" model that's smaller, but at the same time there has always been a HUGE discrepancy in power between the 13" Pro and the 15/16", to the point that, again, I don't think it should be called "Pro".

Not gonna happen. The MacBook Air and the iPad Pro both serve that same segment and better than the 12" MacBook ever did for the vast majority of customers.

That should absolutely be possible. The 12“ MacBook had relatively large bezels, so Apple should be able to fit a 13“ screen in there. I‘m quite sure the size and weight of the 12“ MacBook are the targets for the redesigned Air and I will be first in line to get it.

Would love it to, but thinking that's in iPad territory.

They really aren't in the same segment though. The iPad Pro is not a general purpose Mac. The previous MacBooks were underpowered because the Intel CPUs with the power requirements were underpowered. The M1 changes that. Apple could make a powerful, under 1 kg that is nearly as powerful as the M1 MacBook Air. I don't know what Apple is intending with the M1 iPad Pro but the current iPadOS can't be a substitute for macOS.

I love the M1 MacBook Air but I would give up a bit of power to lose 1/3 of the weight of the current Air to get a 2 pound (0.92 kg) MacBook. I suspect that you would be giving up more battery life than CPU performance anyway.

Yep. I could see a *new* MacBook with updated design language to match the iPhone / iPad / new 24” iMac; likewise available in 5-7 colors and quickly the most desirable consumer-oriented notebook Apple has ever made ;)

To me it seems silly that they have two Macbook Pro 13. Especially since the higher end revision is usually the much better one. M1 being an outlier at the moment until the 14" M2.

At any rate the regular Macbook Pro should just be rechristened Macbook. As everyone keeps saying these are entry machines not meant for pros. Even though it is in the name. While the real Macbook Pro should remain Macbook Pro.

I upgraded my 2015 to Big Sur and it's OK - a bit sluggish but nothing terrible - Catalina was snappier.

I also have the 2017 and it's at Catalina where my wife uses it for her crafting. She has no need for Big Sur.
