I have read about jailbreaking but I must confess I understand very little.

What are the basic advantages of jailbreaking?

    What is Cedia?

If I attempt to jailbreak an iPhone 4 myself (after doing some proper research about how to do it) would I run high risk of turning it into a brick?

Can I unlock my phone without jailbreaking it? I will travel to Europe for 3 weeks soon and would like to be able to use it with a local SIM.

If I jailbreak it will I be able to use it as a personal hotspot?

I think the search function is very useful here

    1 frees your device
2 Cydia allows you to install 3rd party apps and tweeks not found in Itunes app store
3 no you can't brick it by unlocking
4 depends on baseband version and firmware

you only benefit yourself searching and learning what you are doing.

Ya, this probably isn't what you want to hear, but basically you need to spend several hours just Googling/Macrumoring general jail breaking info. We've all been in your shoes, just be patient and you'll learn what you need to to make your decision.

Having said that, here are a few quick answers:
-Cydia is basically an non-apple App store that JB'ing allows you to run on your iDevice once you've JB'en.
-Unlocking your device is a more complicated question that you'll need to spend significant time reading these forums on. But, if you are all the way up to date on your iOS software, then I'm going to guess that you're phone isn't likely able to be unlocked (there are other things like Gevey SIM mod, but I don't know much about that).
-All JB'en iPhones can download a tweak from Cydia that enables you to use your native tethering/personal hotspot, I have it, and it's great (don't have to pay 20/mo just to tether)
Good luck. If you hang around here long enough, you're bound to JB :)

You will be amazed on what the iPhone is capable of when allowed !

I used the redsn0w 0.9.10b5 to un tethered jb my iPhone 4.

Make sure you perform a backup via i tunes.

All you do is follow the instructions on the redsn0w screen.

Learn about putting your phone into dfu mode.

once you have jb just don't go downloading everything without doing some form of research first.

Also do some research on how to resolve possible hiccups so you don't panic if it happens. Bricking your iPhone is very rare as a simple restore via iTunes resolves most issues.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

And by jailbreaking your phone you can make it a personal hotspot
