I can go a week without a computer only if I'm able to use my BlackBerry during that week :D
Exactly my train of thoughts. :)

This past week I went Monday through Friday without a computer because I was on a band trip (Disney World) but I had my BlackBerry and that was a great thing to have.

If you gave me a iPhone or a BlackBerry to use, then maybe. I wouldnt do it unless I could keep the iPhone or BlackBerry, though! :p

i could with no problems unless i was lock in my place i'd probably then be bored to death. the only thing i'd miss the most is my music. i no longer own any other form of cd player, and only have a few LPs to listen to at this point so that might drive me up a wall.

Under typical circumstances, I would have a difficult time staying off the computer at home for a week, or even a few days. My vote in the poll reflects this far more likely scenario.

That having been said, when we're on vacation it's pretty easy to do because we're out and about doing stuff so I am out of the 'get home, check email, surf web, stalk on MR' routine.:p

You guys' comments makes me want to post another poll, worded something like:

How much time do you "waste" online that you feel could be much better spent doing something more constructive?

Interesting answers, I'm sure. Maybe for many of us, our breaking free of TV addiction is just simply a transfer of wasted time from the TV to the computer. There's so much more I know I could accomplish if I replaced pointless forum-surfing with productive activities. Not to say that forum surfing is NEVER productive, as often times we solve problems or learn new things through it... but generally, I find it's usually a waste of time.

I noticed that spending an hour or two a day, 5 days a week allowed me to memorize over 1000 Chinese characters used in Japanese writing, in less than half a year. Granted I can't write them all from memory, but I can read almost all of them in a wide variety of contexts. With an efficient memorization system, and just a half hour or 45 minutes, it's amazing how much you can learn if you just keep at it.

I feel myself committing to some new lifestyle changes :D.

Its called vacation, I've done it before and I'll do it again, just go somewhere without internet access or has major prices for it and all of a sudden bringing your computer doesn't even hit you as a necessity.

I did 2 months cold turkey last year (well, I cheated a couple times when the opportunity presented its self but only to check emails).

I usually take a month or so off every year but the rest of the time I'm a heavy user.

If I was on holiday then it wouldn't be a problem. Otherwise I couldn't - I'm always on a computer for work

i dont even want to think about it......... i bet i could have been a kick ass guitar.....hero player! ha jk but seriously, i could be great at an instrument or something if it werent for internet

but as far as no computer, i went 3 months without one when i was working on oil rigs and such last summer. you learn to live without it very easily. also had no tv so i read a TON of great books:)

Just been on a writer's course, in a countryside retreat in Shropshire (UK). No computers, no mobile phone coverage, no internet, no nothing except 30 acres of beautiful gardens and views. For two weeks.

Really nice.

When I came back was really reluctant to start using computers again.

On vacation, No prob!
At home it would be very hard! Everything I do is with the computer and internet.

I've gone a month without my computer before; it's not too bad. I mean sure I do have a smartphone, but I didn't have my computer.

I'm going to have to be without a computer for a week because of Cross Country camp next month. :D I find that there is enough going on there that I don't even think about a computer.

I am going to be forced to for a whole week.

I'm heading off to camp in July, and my parents don't want me to bring my MB (probably a wise decision), even though there is free wifi at camp...

It would be nice if I had a iPod touch by then....:D

i could totally go without email and reading websites for a week... but stuff like listening to music, finding movie times, finding recipes... stuff like that... they have all become way too much a part of my life... i think it would be very hard to go a week without a computer... i use it far more than i realize i do...

Could you go one week without using your computer...
Well as my MacBook is in need of it's 7th return for warranty issues I can confirm that, yes, I can be forced to spend a week(or more) without a computer. However, this is likely to be the longest repair, and also the first since forewent a TV and started to rely on just BBC iPlayer and ITV catch-up for my viewing pleasure.... oh, and youporn.com;-)

I've almost gone a week without being on any type of computer. I wouldn't choose to, however, unless I needed to take a serious break.
