Does the Series 1 count your steps etc without your phone on you?

Thanks

Yeah, you can count your steps with Apple watches as they all contains numerous features such as health and fitness. For instance, if you have forgotten your iPhone at home or anywhere, you can turn your watch into a pedometer, it will store all the info in it and will sync as soon as it gets into contact with iPhone to get paired up. However, if you are still not satisfied, you can check this article.

I'm using Apple watch and it also count your steps. I would say others to use the Apple watch because it also various other features like checking fitness. Sync your contact information from your iPhone and many other things.

@ajo - really don't bother with that article. it's old, which makes it confusing or in parts just plain wrong and will waste your time. the part on "How to Calibrate the Pedometer Step Tracking on Your Apple Watch" especially. i'm sure there's plenty of knowledgeable people here who can help whatever questions you have though, but i implore you not to even bother reading that.
