I'm currently on the trail version of Pathfinder 8 which has Cover Flow: looks like I'm going to be spending 14 Euros to buy a program that has a feature that Apple's used since the first color iPod / iTunes and decided to get rid of for no apparent or good reason.

TotalFinder, IFRC, had a Coverflow view and integrated with Finder. However, with the ongoing changes to Finder it appears TF is on its last legs. That's a shame because it was a great Finder extension.

I get that – I, for one, missed the skeuomorphic Podcasts app in iOS 5, which disappeared and the Internet seemed to help bury in time.

But I like the new Gallery view more than Cover Flow. It feels like a definite refinement to me; neither the visual clutter nor the processing overhead involved in presenting that three-dimensional view, and the reclaimed screen space is actually used to present the focused file's visual.

And what's this about the space bar – are you talking about Quick Look? That's still there.

coverflow hasn't been there since like Mavericks I think? It's definitely not in High Sierra. I mean there's that ugly flat pseudo version of cover flow but I can't tell a difference between that and gallery.

I don't understand. You're saying coverflow view is not available in the Finder past Mavericks? I'm using it right now. Maybe I'm misunderstanding?

I think Project Alice was just mistaken about that; it definitely is in High Sierra. > _ >

Wow... I just realized how inferior the new view is. The older view you could narrow down and sort by different criteria, like for example alphabetically and date created. This made it easier to narrow down. The new version is just a sea of little thumbnails and a scrollbar, that's it.

What a disaster of UX.

Deleted - found out I was wrong.

Yup

BTW - like the Monarch of the Seas graphic. Been on her a few times.

Nope, you can still sort it. The same way you change the sorting for the other 3 views.

You are correct. You have to right click on an item to bring up the menu and can then sort. Thanks for pointing that out.

I see that now, it's still horrible UX, if I sort alphabetically, I can't quickly see where exactly I am alphabetically in the list, heck I can't even invert the order. If I sort by date created I can't reference easily the dates either, yes sure it will show the current item info in the preview panel, but it's not the same thing.

I think they mean it’s still there, but not the way it used to be before. The icons used to tilt a bit like in iTunes, but in Yosemite and later they are flat.

I am also disappointed to see this gone. I'm a digital artist who used the cover flow tool almost exclusively. I've been considering switching to microsoft for a few years as the once intuitive usability of apple products has recently eroded in my experience. Either that or I'm stuck in my ways and apple is passing me by.

definitely the latter... :D

Me too, man. I used cover flow for all of my work folders. There was something about seeing the actual images moving back and forth left to right that gave the user a sense of "place" when you're navigating through a director of sometimes hundreds of InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop files. Now that I've been using Mojave for a week I realize how much I miss it. "Don't know whatcha got until it's gone" is REAL.

I hate to sound like a complainer, because the Finder is better than it's ever been. But I find myself missing cover flow so much I might spring for PathFinder again.

I think I might email Tim and Craig and ask if they could add it back in. Or maybe they could add a an option to use the new Gallery view but with with a list indeed of just icons on the bottom? Maybe everyone here that misses cover flow too can do the same?

I'm down.

Not to keep ranting (this is still a fresh wound), but it seems like in the past Apple used to build on it's tools year after year in a beneficial manner, but this is just taking away a super useful tool that has been around for several years and supplanting it with an inferior and (for me) slower viewer.

It doesn't make sense to me.

That's not true. I'd been using it up until the past week or so, when I finally upgraded to Mojave.

Wow... I haven't met anyone who uses Cover Flow - and I work in an almost Mac exclusive industry. Personally I'm glad its gone, Gallery is far more productive and less "gimmicky".

Well, I never use columns. Ever. That doesn't mean I believe that no one does or that it should be done away with simply because ***I*** don't use it.
[doublepost=1542134191][/doublepost]Not having cover flow has basically hobbled me at work. I'm not happy about it either. Did it ever occur to Apple to ASK what people use and want? I don't want or need Gallery. I rely on Cover Flow. So much for what the customer wants.

Craig Federighi: hey guys what can we do to the Finder for marketing and for Tim to present?

Lets make up a new view called Gallery view that's dumbed down mediocre version of cover flow. With a new name and sexy icon look it'll surely impress.

Craig: what about usability?

Doesn't matter, dark look plus nameless icon row looks sexy.

Craig: great!

not everyone misses the 1990s coverflow option; some of us like living in the present. here's another 'fun' script:

Craig: Shouldn't we just keep everything the same, and never move forward?

Tim: Sure, that's what people want. The same thing, unchanged, forever.

Craig: Great! So let's in fact return to OS 9, and bring back the SCSI ports!

If you look at my earlier post I explain how usability is affected, by having a row of icons, there is a significant loss of information, sorting ability, etc. The row of icons doesn't add much if anything to function, it's just an aesthetic change for the sake of change. If you have a particular use case where you think it's superior and it justifies the loss cover flow I'd like to hear about it.

the sad thing is, it doesn't matter what you or i think; apple does what it does... as always. and our choice is simple; adapt, or stay with an earlier OS. what else is there? (and sorry if i was being rude btw)

No problem I'm used to being attacked for standing up against Apple :p. But I think if there is a genuine concern we should give feedback, there is some hope Apple might come to its senses. It's happened in the past... not as often as I'd like but it happens.

And by the way, now that you mention OS9, not sure if you remember but Apple had killed Finder labels, spring-loading folders, and a bunch of other useful things which they slowly brought back in part I think due to feedback.
