Pretty sure WWDC will be cancelled. While the cases are slowing in China, the USA and Europe are only really at the first stages of the epidemic. in the UK, for example, there is a huge spike predicted. Watching the BBC News, the cases have doubled in only three days. Over a 100 now.

UK Government now admit that the containment phase has passed (and failed - because there are now cases where medical authorities cannot trace the transmission chain - i.e the infected person has not contracted the virus from another country) and now the emphasis is trying to slow the spread.

I think it will hit the USA hard.

Tripled actually

Sorry, but scientific research has to meet tests of statistical significance (and replication) before results can be called facts. And the early data likely did not meet the statistical tests for a high enough P value 2 or 3 months ago. Might not even now.

It's more about acting as a risk precaution under uncertainty than scientific facts.

The spread of the virus was caused by people who didn't wash their hands (etc.), didn't cover their mouths, and who didn't self quarantine when feeling under the weather. Which one should do no matter what politicians blather, as even the annual seasonal flu can kill (if not you, your grandparents, et.al.)

Yeah, many states in the US haven't even started testing yet, due to the shortage of test kits. Once tests are more readily available, we'll likely see a huge spike in the numbers. The US is getting hit harder than the number of diagnosed show. It's almost to the benefit of governments trying to bury info, since you can't diagnose someone if you don't have a test for them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I believe it has been spreading in the US since December. Some may have died from it before the official death stats started, but many would have recovered like they would with the normal flu.

The CDC says there have been 32 Million cases of the normal flu in the US so far this season with 18,000 deaths.

If you believe, like I do, that further tests will show that more people have Coronavirus, then this will mean the mortality is lower than being reported.

[bad_joke] Just waiting for a major news outlet to pick up from somewhere out there one charlatan's very serious claim that the radiation from a smartphone in use actually kills the virus at the spot.[/bad_joke]

And the best advice to avoid COVID-19 ... wash your hands.
Also, get a flu shot if you haven't already.

It isn't likely to stop COVID-19 (edit, to be more clear, it's highly unlikely to prevent it), but if you avoid getting a "normal" flu, you won't have to worry about whether the illness you have is COVID-19 or the normal flu. There will likely be numerous panicked people thinking they have one when they have the other.

They'll cancel WWDC and post videos on the developer app.

Keep y'alls iPhones clean and don't touch other peoples phones. You don't know where people's hands have been.

That picture is scary.

Should I buy milk, bread, and eggs, or purell?

Buy Everclear

It definitely will not stop COVID-19.

Also, I get my flu shot annually and tested positive for influenza b last month. This is not a strange phenomenon, either. That is to say, one can get a flu shot, still contract influenza and not contract (or contract) COVID-19.

Not disagreeing with your suggestion to get a flu shot, however!! Always a good idea in my book.

Good article WRT impact on Apple. Bad idea for MR to get into describing, etc. COVID-xx on these pages. A link to WHO, NHS, and CDC would have sufficed. So, MR, how do you edit this complex subject into a "post"? One, two, three paragraphs? What do you include or omit? Who is and what are "Bot's" scientific quals? Where are your references, sources, and footnotes? How can you describe and recount what Chinese authorities (a totalitarian regime BTFW) is allegedly, saying, not saying, withholding, etc.?

Here’s a newsflash: nobody, I mean nobody in China gets to speak in front of a press microphone unless they’re a servant of the State. For example, did a competent medical or scientific professional review what you posted?

MR,
as far as the science and medical merits of this post, you have ø credibility and even less authority in these fields. Kindly realize that this post squarely puts you in the bottomless buckets of media outlets that are adding to the noise. If this is a PSA-like advisory or background, then leave it to the govt. authorities. Otherwise, the Apple-related stuff is fine. What's ironic is that we all know the lengths MR posts go to verify the veracity of statements you yourselves originate about Apple's business, products, etc. Where was your due diligence here? This is an event that is unfolding and changing by the minute. So, will you be monitoring the scientists, medical professionals, and governmental authorities for changing or new information?

MR,
because of the part which contained your shallow dive into this medical subject, it might behoove you to move this thread to the Politics section and close all comments. Just a pondered suggestion. You’re delving into a field that is not at all within your domain. If you feel you’re just relaying known information then where are your, sources quotes, etc.?

This is community college Intro to Journalism or Intermediate Writing knowledge stuff. Does anyone on MR's editorial staff apply technical writing guidelines to your own generated content such as those from the APA Style Manual, for example?

The reason this post pi**es me off so much is that I have spent a lifetime learning, doing, and even teaching the right way to process, analyze, and disseminate knowledge, information, and tools in order to benefit other human beings to live safer and better lives, while also opening and expanding their minds. This goes beyond the complete opposite of responsible and intelligent reporting. I've seen way better Jr High school reports than this.

BTW I'd love to meet this here "MR Bot" to understand "its" medical/scientific background and knowledge.

TIA and screw the flames.
Apple SH since 2007.

(Random: on second thought I’m not surprised since we’re moving toward a tipping point where a majority of smartphone users will actually believe and trust an App or a synthetic voice (which also follows you 24/7, etc,) to tell them how they’re feeling or how they should go about their day. Ken Cook, Jeff Bezos, and their likes will become the faces we’ll come to know and trust when delivering personal medical information and advice. Take it from an old fart who among many other things, actually developed FDA-appvd medical and diagnostic support software in an earlier life, today most don't realize they're riding on that slippery slope until they're well on their way down. Considering that we're already relieving ppl of remembering a password, safeguarding one's own house keys, or reaching over to turn on the lights, just for starters. I'm talking abt getting way past the convenience and assistance aspect of coming home to a warmed house. Problem is we're losing the ability to tell where that point is. Instead for example, Elon Musk tells us where that point is. Life concepts and human knowledge are being dummied and boiled down to a point where they're easily mimicked and incorporated into an App that takes a week or less to build and repackage. Put an Apple or multicolored alphabet on it and it's trusted no questions asked. It starts like this here now, that dumbing down. Low-information citizens. It should instead start from Word One with due diligence, responsibility, and accountability. Integrity, owned and showed, through the full 360º. Lead by example and pay it forward MR, please-you do have the opportunity with a nicely sized captive audience.)

Curious about that. How many people who are freaked out about COVID opted to not get the flu vaccine this year. Just a thought.

1.) Nice article !

2.) Let's NOT forget that Apple was, NOT too long ago, potentially looking at iPhone tariffs ! ... that should have been their Wake Up Call ... but NOPE ! ... to me, the current situation that Apple is in is caused by the very simple fact that Apple is primarily focused on Apple TV+ right now ... in other words, Cook & his staff completely took their eyes off the ball ! ... Cook may be bored with Hardware & Software, OR may simply have Hollywood Envy ... NOT sure, but Apple, with its vast treasure chest, should have never gotten itself into this position ! ... if "it" Hits the Fan, Apple's Board will be forced to oust Cook & his staff !
I am really not sure what point you're trying to make here. If it's that Apple should have seen the problems coming and simply (!) shifted production to another country, then where do you suggest, seeing that it's a worldwide problem, Mars maybe?

Good article. Sometimes you guys put out better articles than you read in the papers.

The plus side for the U.S. is outside of big cities, it is VERY spread out and very few use public transportation.

I think WWDC will be OK by June. The minute that the warm weather arrives, viruses like these die.

But WWDC has to be announced in a few weeks, people have to enter the lottery, book hotels and flights.
Announcing the event and then cancel it would be bad for developers and even for Apple's reputation.
One of the biggest events in Milan has been postponed to June so authorities are confident we'll be back to back to our day to day life by then, and I agree. A doctor I spoke to yesterday told me this is going to be the worst month, and by the end of April we could still have some diseases but the worst will be over.
If you were Apple would you take the risk though? Google cancelled his conference, so did Facebook.
It can be online only and they'd save time as during WWDC engineers spend their time at the conference and don't work on the beta they are releasing.
