Live TV on iOS and OSX would be a game changer, not an Apple branded television.

I would love to have a window on my desktop with a live Texans game that would let adjust the bandwidth so I don't Bogart the cafe's wifi … or even have an audio only option.

The cable cos still just don't get it, do they?

As long as these apps only work when connected to their own network, they are pretty much useless.

As long as I'm a paying customer, and have a valid log-in, they shouldn't care how or where I'm watching.

The more the powers that be in the entertainment industry treat paying customers like criminals, the more they're just going to push us all away, and into alternative solutions. Independent content creators deserve our support and hard earned dollars far more than these racketeers..

While I wholeheartedly agree, I will say this:

VPN

Love it, I've been waiting or this since several other cable operators did this first.

Works great, but more Chanel's woud be nice.

Love to see this for Dish, but correct me if I am wrong..

Dish already has one. It's on the itunes. It's called Dish Remote Access "on itunes" you need the slingbox adapter for dish though. It's actually better then those other ones because you can watch tv anywhere there is internet. I don't have dish network but I do have a slingbox and it's awesome.

The big gatekeepers, the wireless and cable honchos, make decent dollars from just selling the bandwidth wholesale. But they make a KILLING by clustering all your services to together in tiers, and then, to get something good from level 4, you're spending over $100 for cable TV alone, and you're paying for a lot of crap you'll never want. Sure you can buy a season of a good show for about $35 (Mad Men, for example), and watch Netflix, and Apple TV. But they want to keep pretending that 500 channels is a useful way to transmit information to you, because that's where the Kabletowns make the money.

It's time for the big gatekeepers to die.

Remember when the V-chip was force-effed into every TV made since 1999?

The V-chip was an added provision in U.S. President Bill Clinton's Telecommunications Act of 1996. "If every parent uses this chip wisely, it can become a powerful voice against teen violence, teen pregnancy, teen drug use, and for both learning and entertainment," Clinton said during his speech as he signed the Telecommunications Act on February 8, 1996. "We're handing the TV remote control back to America's parents so that they can pass on their values and protect their children."[3]

The content they intended to destroy is alive and...thriving. Pregnant teen hoes banging greasy dudes everywhere, and kids love it!

The V-chip should have been the end to unreasonable censorship in real adult programming.

Shoot, not a chance in heck... I gotta tinkle.

So...what's the point of this? If I have to be using this on my own network, I'd rather just watch tv on an actual television. Maybe I'm missing something.

I suppose this might come in handy if I feel like watching tv while sitting on the toilet. Dumb app...

lol at Americans.

only you guys would be excited about an $80/mo iPad service.

please don't tell me you have to get a 12-month contract as well

This is the future. If Apple can get all TV services (OK, a bunch of them) to put out apps and allow direct streaming to Live content, they can not only port Live TV services to all IOS devices, they can have them all be used with iTV and therefor ditch any boxes. When Steve "Finally Cracked It" it was with apps/IOS IMO.

Keep em coming

You didn't read the article, did you? The only reason they're doing this is because it a) keeps you stuck with the box, and b) because they can get more money out of your pocket with an added service.

That said, i agree with you, but i still understand Cox.

I personally hope that this isn't the future. So far, all these services require a cable-subscription plan. I want a future in which cable TV plays absolutely no role.

Have fun waiting for that pipe dream. You'll always be dependent on the distribution layer, and as long as the distribution layer is in the hands of a few, they will extract premium rents - why? because they can. Sure, the gatekeepers might change from cable to radio, but that matters little. They'll still rip you off any way they can. And, since were on MR - thats their prerogative. If you don't like it... "go android".

Bright House also has the same deal for their customers. It stinks though because these cable companies are limiting access to your home ip which means you can't take it on the road.

I highly doubt anybody would pay just to get cable on there iPad. This is just giving existing cox internet/tv customers another way to watch there service. I'm surprised they aren't charging extra per month

And hopefully this is nothing like the half baked cox DVR app they have for iPad. The thing barely works and when it does it takes about 5 minutes just to tell it to record a show

I really don't think this is it (for the "iTV") The apps don't allow you to record shows, all have disparate interfaces, and still wouldn't be available for all cable subscribers (Many small, local sub-providers that the interface wouldn't work for).

If Steve wanted to enter the TV business he would want to change the model, not conform to it.

Agreed, we want whatever, whenever, wherever on any device without having to sign up for any "plan" or multiple apps needed.

Discount the me too also ran stations the cable companies throw into their "packages" to make it look as if they have a lot to offer.

Only a matter of time.

But, once that happens the cable companies providing the internet service will claim that since their stuff is data transfer, we now all have to pay by the data usage "plans".

Surprised that this hasn't surfaced yet.

Time for Apple to have their own satellite up there or buy Dish or Direct TV.

We already have that. For $80-$150 a month. In your home. Only. Enjoy.

I'm not sure what Steve thought he cracked, but if this was it then I mus say I'm rather disappointed.
