Has anyone tried to upgrade the i5 in the base 2011 iMac to a 65W i7 processor? Apparently it works with models that had upgrade options (but the base model didn't), but I haven't heard definitively one way or the other if you can upgrade the base model.

But that just shows how to do it... doesn't say anything about if it works on the base model or not. Unless I'm missing something.

Again, googling brought me to a thread with this quote that someone did with a 27inch (the same WILL apply to your machine though)

The cpu upgrade can be done while adding an SSD to the system. I was able to upgrade my i5 2500s to an i7 2600
Just make sure:
A. It doesn't use a lot more W (+25% of original absolute max)
B. Doesn't run too much hotter
C. It's the right socket... I've seen people try to force the wrong socket CPU in, it's ridiculous/embarrassing.

If you have to ask "why?" on any of those points, then you should not be trying to change the CPU yourself.
