Just out of curiosity, how hard am I pushing the CPU with Zoom calls? I have to make a lot for work, and was curious how big of a task this is for the M1 8/512? So far, it has been smooth sailing, but I always hesitate opening other apps while on a call (Word, Safari tabs, etc.)

Thanks!

You should be able to see this in activity monitor. Not much, I can zoom and air play at the same time on my 2020 base i3 no problem and fan does not turn on.

For the M1? Zoom is like child's play. You've got the world's most advanced consumer grade CPU on your desk, you know that, right?

This year, many 2020 MacBook Air users complained about heating and fan nosies while using video chatting like zoom on the apple community forums mainly during the summer months before the M! chip was released. there are a few complaints but not as much as the intel chip ones.
we would type how we feel their misery and advise not to use too many programs while video chatting.
every computer review stated how great the MacBook air were except for video and heavy usage were the fan noise would kick in followed by 100º temps on the keyboard.

Yikes! So far, I've been ok.
Your MacBook air M1 should be fine,  survived the bloated battery, faulty keyboard and other cpu throttling notebook issues with an intel processor but won't risk releasing subpar performance on their own M1 chip even on the new macbook airs, especially without the fanless design. that was a bold move that might revolutionize the design of the notebook in the future.
