Looks like a crack repair is pretty close to the cost of an entire watch. My daughter cracked the back of her Apple Watch SE. Is it ok to just cover it with a piece of clear shipping tape maybe? Just curious if it would affect the charging at all. At least the screen is not damaged and otherwise seems to be working fine. Thanks.

what part? the "glass" with the sensors is actually sapphire ... if that "cracked" it's likely the sensors won't function anymore, and whether or not charging is impacted, only you can try that out.

I did wind up putting a piece of shipping tape over it and trimming it to a circle. Here's how it looks (with the tape on).

So far no issues charging it and the heart rate monitor agrees within 1 BPM vs my own 44 mm SE on the other wrist (the one pictured is my daughter's 40 mm SE).

wow, that's not a crack, that's shattered ... since it doesn't appear you have AC+, I'd wait for a sale and get a new one

Not sure, but I think her night stand.
Wow.....as it is the underside she wasn't wearing it at the time. Did it get that damage just being dropped on a flat surface? Looks like she may have been twirling it while holding it and it hit the corner of the night stand?

She probably plopped it down too hard before attaching to the charger (it is also on her nightstand). Or fell off her wrist when taking it off too quick. I have done that, but my watch landed on carpet. I didn't ask her specifics though. Almost looks like it hit the edge or corner of that night stand since it does appear to be a point impact.

I agree. I am not accusing her of being rough with the watch, just trying to ascertain whether such damage is due to a very minor drop which would in my opinion mean the watch is too fragile or if it took quite a hit on a corner of something hard which can not perhaps be considered a defect with the watch. Is it still working?
